And They Dance Real Slow in Jackson
In January, the Beacon Charter High School for the Arts Theatre Department is producing the play, And They Dance Real Slow in Jackson. The play takes place in the 1970's in the small town of Jackson, Indiana where everyone knows everyone. The central character, Elizabeth Willow is stricken with polio at an early age, and is wheel chair bound for the rest of her life, cutting her off from other children and attending school. Elizabeth's journey is told by her mother and father and four other supporting ensemble members, who play multiple characters. The ensemble members act as the townspeople and children whose fear of the unknown or abnormal makes them unintentional agents of Elizabeth's destruction. The poetic structure of the play allows the scenes to jump back and forth in time. Dawn Souza Beacon Charter High School for the Arts Theatre Arts Teacher
