SOUPER BOWL 6
[Please Note:  There are three entry times for this event - 4pm, 5pm or 6pm - be sure to book your ticket for the time when you intend to arrive!]

Presented by Haley House Bakery Cafe in partnership with MassArt's Clay for Change and the Center for Art and Community Partnerships.

On Sunday February 9th, from 4-7PM at the Haley House Bakery Café in Roxbury's Dudley Square, a dozen chefs will serve soups made from locally sourced ingredients as a fundraiser for Haley House's Soup Kitchen in the South End.

Upon entering, attendees will select a handcrafted ceramic bowl, courtesy of MassArt's Clay for Change program.  They will then make their way from station to station, sampling the soups produced with locally sourced ingredients.  In sampling a variety of these soups, people realize that with a little creativity, folks can eat locally all year round.  At the end of the event, the attendees are invited to take their bowls home with them.

Five years ago, the Boston Localvores approached the Haley House Bakery Café with the concept of the first Souper Bowl, an event highlighting locally sourced soups.  Three years ago, MassArt's Clay for Change program joined our newly reinvented Souper Bowl, a fundraiser for Haley House's Soup Kitchen in the South End.

Diverse soups featured in past Souper Bowls have included:
Butternut Squash and Apple Soup/Cream of Carrot Soup/French Onion Soup/Kambocha Mash Soup/Kale Soup/Pea Tendril Soup/Pork & Bean Soup/Root Vegetable Lentil Soup/Scotch Broth/Seafood Chowder/Sweet & Spicy Parsnip Soup

Ingredients for the Souper Bowl are sourced from a selection of local farms and purveyors. Iggy's Breads generously donates bread for this occasion.

With a focus on reciprocal learning, Haley House Meals Program offers wholesome nourishment to mind, body and spirit in Boston's oldest soup kitchen, situated in the South End neighborhood. More than simply serving food, the Meals Program is intent on building community and relationships at six breakfasts and three elder meals per week.  It serves home-cooked, nutritious meals as a way to create a space of refuge from the violence and anonymity of the streets.  There are no metal detectors or law enforcement officers present.  The personalist focus of the Meals Programs offers a broader perspective on the systems that create hunger and poverty, while working to create alternatives to those systems.  The funds raised in Souper Bowl V will provide one month of food to be served in the soup kitchen.

Clay for Change is a student activity group at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and "Empty Bowls" is one of its primary initiatives.  Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger. The basic premise is simple: handcrafted ceramic bowls are created, guests are invited to enjoy soup within the bowl and for a cash donation they  keep the bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. The money raised is donated to an organization working to end hunger and food insecurity - in this case, Haley House. Clay for Change works to build strong connections between MassArt and the wider community through the arts and ceramics in particular.

The Center for Art and Community Partnerships (CACP) at MassArt cultivates innovative, sustainable relationships with the broader community to explore and expand the relevance of art in public life. CACP matches MassArt faculty, students, staff, and alumni who want to engage in community-based projects with neighborhood organizations, schools, corporations, and institutions to create mutually-beneficial, sustainable partnerships in the visual arts. The Center uses art as a catalyzing force for citizens to act creatively together.
