Orixa Macbeth
This vocally and visually compelling new production of Shakespeare's bloody masterpiece opens on a devastated landscape. A crazed woman is dancing amongst the rubble of Bahia, Brazil one of the most treacherous of the world's ghettos. Out of this debris of people's lives and deaths, a performance begins to emerge that blends capoeira (Brazilian martial arts), butoh (Japanese dance of the darkness), candomble (Brazilian Voudon), and passion.
The city of Detroit has given birth to many masterpieces in contemporary black theatre. As such, 4theatrsake is pleased to partner with the Charles Wright Museum to bring this taping to the city free of charge. Further, the tape will be used for submission in the National Black Theatre Festival. Charles Wright and 4theatrsake would like to see this play represent the city of Detroit positively on a national level.
Shakespeares spell-binding, supernatural tale of the lust for power ...and its bloody repercussions stars Angela Roberts and Sean Rodriguez in the title role, and is co-directed by Wyldchild L. Chemist and Bernard L. Causey. The outstanding cast is led by: Karen Minard (Macduff), Bernard Causey (Malcolm), Kennikki Jones (Banquo), Ava Rodgers (Lead Witch), Sherina Sharpe (Talented Witch / Lennox) Sansa Sanyika (Chosen Witch), Antonio Rosaro (Donalbain / Ross), and Jasmine McCord (Bleeding Sargent). We are pleased to introduce Angel Chisolm as King Duncan.
THE PLAY Macbeth, (considered the most concise yet darkest of Shakespeares four tragedies), tells the tale of the heroic general, and his successful but ill-fated quest for the throne. In this modern adaptation, Macbeth (Rodriguez) and fellow general Banquo (Jones) are visited by three witches, who prophesy that Macbeth will become Thane (Lord) of Cawdor and then King. As the first part of the prophesies begin to come true, Lady Macbeth (Roberts) persuades her husband to murder King Duncan (Causey) in order to become King sooner - rather than later. This bloody deed sets off a series of more bloody deeds, as Macbeths ambition and quest for power grows. Believing himself to be invincible, Macbeth faces off with Macduff (Minard), and is ultimately defeated.
THE PROCESS In the 'Macbeth Project' the figure of the serial killer emerged as another psycho-cultural trope. We have developed this by imagining the Macbeths in the image of the sado-masochistic relationship that slips out of fantasy and into bloody reality. The intimate, hypersexualised domestic abbatoir of co-dependent relationships was our paradigm.
Candomble is the name given to the Yoruba-based religious tradition of Brazil. In this project the usually vague and evil witches will instead be Candomble practitioners (performing actual rites).
Macbeth features some of the most memorable and oft-quoted lines from Shakespeare, including "Out, damned spot!, "Double, double, toil and trouble," Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow... and "By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes . . ," and Fair is foul and foul is fair.
The 4theatrsake collective was founded on four principals: (1) Theatrical Experimentation, (2) Social Justice, (3) Urban Networking, (4) Environmental Consciousness. We serve to give a voice to many talented Detroit actors and present works of art that interact with the audience in the truest sense of theatre.
