Club Chuckles Ten Year Anniversary Bash
Club Chuckles Ten Year Anniversary Bash with Chris Thayer, Donny Divanian, Caitlin Gill, Sean Keane, Jesse Elias, Joey Devine, Couples (ex-Something With Genitals), Freakotronic and more!!

Saturday, Dec. 28th at Hemlock Tavern. 9pm, $5. Mostly seated show.

Outer-echeclon comedy showcase Club Chuckles is turning the ripe old age of 10. Launched in 2003 by Hemlock Tavern live music booker Anthony Bedard as a "Safeway Select"-style ploy to book less bands, Club Chuckles has achieved the cold-comfort distinction of becoming the currently longest-running "comedy-in-a-rock-club" monthly series in Americapresaging the alt rock/alt comedy crossover wet-dream of the 2000s, predating Patton Oswalt's "The Comedians of Comedy" tour, and even birthing a comedy record label (Talent Moat). Club Chuckles also instituted the comedy world's first-ever 10 drink maximum policy in the wake of the heckler uprising at Todd Barry's impromptu crowd-work set at Hemlock in 2006. Sure, every late-to-the-party, ambulance-chasing Johnny Come(dy) Lately rock club is now trying to pad out their schedules with laffs & yuks, and the whole comedy-in-a-rock-club thing is now the toast of greater Brooklyn, but back in the early 2000s, this kind of programming nearly got Bedard sh*t-canned from his job until Neil Hamburger smashed the Hemlock's all-time bar sales record.

Over the past decade, Club Chuckles has presented a harrowing, dazzling array of stand-up, sketch, musical and otherwise unclassifiable comedy in a rock club setting. A rolling, bated-breath mess of orgasmic hilarity and painfully uncomfortable liminal moments, rank professionalism and existential stunt work, Club Chuckles has actualized a spit-take saturated bone zone relatively free from the strictures of traditional comedy clubs, and at substantially lower prices than the typical comedy world wallet gouge.

With a killer lineup of some of Club Chuckles' current favorites, this 10 year anniversary show is sure be one for the new Dark Ages! See you there, comedy fans!

"Club Chuckles: a pivotal force in giving comedians opportunities to reach new audiences - people who regularly go to rock shows but rarely step into established comedy venues such as the Punch Line or Cobb's." - SF Chronicle

"Club Chuckles opened the rock music doors to a bunch of jokers and the local comedy landscape is far better for it. They've shaken their metaphorical full moon at the two-drink minimum and high ticket prices of traditional comedy clubs, and instead offers a ten-drink maximum and lesser dollar tickets to those hungry for something other than the modern-day equivalent of 'Take my wife.' Club Chuckles has committed itself to relentlessly weird, reliably hilarious performers." - SF Weekly

"There's certainly no shortage of live comedy in the Bay Area, but you have to hand it to Club Chuckles for keeping it weird. Avoiding line-ups packed with middle-aged men whining about their therapy bills, or cosmonaut princesses with pubic hair obsessions, Club Chuckles can often be found lurking in the rock-saturated shadows of the Hemlock Tavern's back room performance space, infused with the kind of punk rock vibes you'll never pick up at the buttoned-down, two-drink minimum comedy clubs. The sold out, eight-year anniversary show at the considerably swankier digs of the Verdi Club might have been better lit, but the rowdy element still prevailed, as an entire line-up devoted to the comedy of the awkward braved the hecklers to bring the laffs." - SF Bay Guardian

"Club Chuckles has hosted an impressive variety of cutting edge local and out-of-town comedians monthly at the Hemlock Tavern. It's a non-traditional venue for comedy, appropriate to showcase some non-traditional acts." - KQED
