The Visit by Friedrich Durrenmatt
Any town on the edge of death is rife with desperation. Guellen which could be anywhere or nowhereis just such a place.
A once wealthy and thriving cultural center, Guellen (Swiss-German for manure) now suffers from an economic downturn that threatens to destroy the community: closed factories, failed businesses, widespread unemployment, municipal bankruptcy. Enter Claire Zachanassian, who left generations ago to make her way in the world. Now an elderly billionaire, she returns home with an offer of hope for the people she left behind. She will give 100 million to the municipality and to the citizens of Guellen, a sum that would guarantee the towns rebirth and the townspeoples economic security. But she has a single condition which must be met if she is to keep the town out of the grave: her old lover, who betrayed her 50 years earlier by refusing to acknowledge their child, must be killed.
Part morality play, part thriller, and part comedy, The Visit is a searing commentary on the human condition. It is an evening of theater not to be missed.
