Make a Journey!
If something popped out of the sky, told you to drop all your work and migrate to the Big City to witness the birth of something BIG, what would you do? Drawing on 1,000 years of theatrical traditions, that's exactly the question to be explored in a brand new and ever old holiday show L.A. PASTORELA: A Nativity Play for the City of Angels, written by Raul Cardona & D. W. Jacobs, directed by Raul Cardona, with music by Sam Robles. Teatro Arroyo // Theater Stream is collaborating with PUC Schools: Partnerships to Uplift Communities and Ave. 50 Studio, to produce and present this icy hot mix of music, comedy and mysticism.
Five hundred years ago, during the Golden Age of Spain, the already ancient Medieval shepherd plays were taken to Mexico to help convert the native populations. With the blending of cultures, these humble plays transformed into immensely popular and lively holiday entertainments, where the sacred and the profane mixed freely, drawing everyone into the spirit of celebration. Teatro Arroyo will update this ancient theatrical journey into 21st C. Los Angeles. Through song, dance, music, drama, comedy and poetry, L. A. PASTORELA will explore how any pilgrimage or migration can attract angels to encourage and demons to distract, as they battle over human souls! Previews begin in the first week of December. The run of the show will culminate with a closing night at the Winter Noise on December 21, 2013!
This play about nomadic shepherds will itself be a nomadic production, with the whole production carried on the backs of the cast and crew. Previews begin on December 4 at Cals, with an opening on December 7 at Ave. 50 Studio, a run the following week at Excel, then moving back to Ave. 50 for three nights before presenting a closing performance at the Ebell Club.
