BENEFICIARY: Neighborhood House
We are thrilled to be raising money for Neighborhood House. Neighborhood House (a St. Paul non-profit that has been around for 117 years) works with immigrants, refugees, and low-income Minnesotans to provide the skills needed to pursue higher education goals, gain employment, and become self-sufficient, thriving members of our community.
SPECIAL GUEST: Copper Street Brass Quintet
Our headliner performer this year is a group that has been described by MPR's Steve Staruch as "Smart programming, bright personalities. The ensemble has gone from strength to strength." They have performed on Minnesota Public Radio, KARE 11, have traveled from Montana to Massachusetts, and were featured musicians at R.T. Rybak's big marriage celebration on August 1. Bill Morelock, host at Classical Public Radio compares them to the South Park of brass quintets. While they are immensely talented and highly trained musicians, they take the art of brass music to a performance level that is engaging, interactive, and fresh.
SPECIAL GUEST: In the Heart of the Beast
To complete our Street Festival, the performers of the Heart of the Beast will be part of our concert. HOBT uses water, flour, newspaper, paint, and unlimited imagination to tell stories that explore the struggles and celebrations of human existence. Drawing inspiration from the world's traditions of puppet and mask theatre and its lively roots in transformative ritual and street theatre, HOBT creates vital, poetic theater for all ages and backgrounds.
SOPRANO SOLOIST: Teresa Tierney
One of our featured soloists is Teresa Tierney. Teresa is a lyric soprano who has performed with the Oratorio Society of Minnesota, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Rochester Choral Arts Ensemble, and Thursday Musical. She is a composer, a teacher, a performer, and one of the most warm and down-to-earth soloists I've ever met.
TENOR SOLOIST: Andrew Kane
We will also be featuring a tenor soloist who comes to us from a little group called the Rose Ensemble. Andrew Kane has also sung with VocalEssence, Minnesota Chorale, and the Minnesota Opera. He enjoys global music and singing in a variety of languages.
ABOUT VOCALPOINT
VocalPoint has worked with such gifted musicians as Maria Jette, Steve Staruch, and KrisAnne Weiss. In 2012, we raised over $22,800 supporting the work of Open Arms of Minnesota, we hosted panels of the AIDS Quilt that hung around the performance space and we commissioned a piece by local composer Abbie Betinis. For our 2012-2013 season, we partnered with Avenues for Homeless Youth. And the incredible Jearlyn Steele headlined our St. Paul concerts with her amazing talent.
