"Messiah" at Saint Mary's Church, Cold Spring New York - December 22
Two special benefit performance of George Frideric Handel's Messiah (Parts I and II (abridged)) will be presented on Sunday, December 22 at Saint Mary's-in-the-Highlands, Cold Spring, New York. All proceeds will benefit Saint-Mary's-in-the-Highlands and The Philipstown Food Pantry. Performances will take place at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. There will be a reception open to all attendees from 3:30-4:30 in Saint Mary's parish hall.

The Messiah orchestra will have 21 of the top professional period instrument players from the finest New York City orchestras, and the same size chorus, along with four outstanding soloists. These musicians have performed in the annual Messiahs at Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Saint Thomas Church, and Trinity Church. Many of the players were in The Beggar's Opera orchestra at the Philipstown Depot Theatre last fall, with stage and musical direction by Gordon Stewart.

The soloists include tenor Steven Brennfleck and bass Dashon Burton, both of whom sang Messiah at Avery Fisher last year. Mr. Burton will be singing it at Carnegie Hall on December 23. Beacon resident Gabriela Mikova Johnson will perform the soprano solos. And of very special local interest, this will be the first time Philipstown residents can fully appreciate why Vincent Tamagna's son Nicholas has built a highly successful international career as a countertenor.

Conductor Gordon Stewart is the publisher of the online and print versions of Philipstown.info. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Oberlin College, he also holds a master's degree from the University of Chicago; a certificate in theater and music from the University of Vienna; and a master's in fine arts from the Yale University Drama School. He left theater and music to become deputy chief speechwriter for Jimmy Carter, followed by a distinguished career in the political, business, and international affairs worlds.
