Crazy Betty by Charlotte Higgins
Crazy Betty is an original play written by prolific EL Dorado County playwright Charlotte Higgins and directed by the acclaimed Maggie Upton. The play will premiere at the California Stage on October 1, 2021, and run for three weekends.
Betty and Annie, a generation apart, are bound together by the death of someone they loved. Reunited after 10 years, they try to forge a friendship and help each other beat a system stacked against them. All Betty wants from her dollar store job is a decent shift and health insurance. Annie, fresh out of prison, cant get work anyplace but the local strip club. The two women try to outrun the past but find its been lying in wait all along.
The play features the talents of local actors Georgann Wallace, Savannah Nettle, Devon Machado, Eason Donner, and Frank Swaringen.
Playwright, Charlotte Higgins is a member of the Dramatists Guild of America; the International Centre for Women Playwrights; and Honor Roll, an advocacy group for women playwrights over 40. She wrote and performed with San Franciscos Writers Who Act; was an artist-in-residence with Z Space Studio, and was a founding member of the former Reality Check theater company which wrote and performed original works throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. She was a recipient of a Zellerbach Family Foundation grant for the development of her work. A native of Alabama, she is a long-time resident of Northern California.
Director, Maggie Upton has been well-known in the regional theatre community for many years as a director, actor, and teacher. Maggie appeared in Leading Ladies (Best Supporting Actor, Ellies), and directed Juno and the Paycock for Calstage, and Charlotte Higgins Birmingham Blues, to mention a couple of the numerous theatre projects she has worked on and is the proud recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from SARTA.
