During the mid-90s, the Ultimate Fighting Championship rose to prominence and introduced American fans to the world of Mixed Martial Arts. One of the early stars of the UFC was a 2-time All-American amateur wrestler from Arizona State University, Dan Severn. Nicknamed "The Beast" for his intensity and brutality inside the octagon, Severn won the 8 man tournament at UFC 5. He then went on the win the UFC's 1995 Ultimate Ultimate Tournament. He became the second UFC Superfight Champion after defeating Ken Shamrock at UFC 6. Severn also had success in the world of professional wrestling holding the NWA World Heavyweight Championship on two occasions including one title reign that lasted 4 years. An accomplished martial artist in several disciplines, Severn is one of only two professional MMA fighters with over 100 career victories. He has been inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame, NWA Hall of Fame and Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame.
