Lemierre's Awareness Night and Fundraiser
On April 7th of 2014 the only non-profit for Lemierre's Syndrome will be holding a Lemierre's Awareness Night and fundraiser at the Lagunitas Beer Sanctuary in Petaluma, from 5:30 to 8:30pm. This event will include special guest speaker Dr. Thomas Arnold, dinner & dessert, music by The Highway Poets and a wonderful selection of raffle items provided by local businesses. Proceeds for the event will go to further awareness for Lemierre's Syndrome and to help fund more research for this disease that still leaves doctors asking questions.
This disease affected our community personally in 2008 when a 17-year old soccer star of St. Vincent's High School was diagnosed with Lemierre's. Michael Iniguez suffered for weeks before Dr. Thomas Arnold of UCSF finally recognized the symptoms. Michael was treated and cured of Lemierre's but not before his heart was severely damaged. He has now undergone 3 open-heart surgeries and has used this experience to positively influence children with heart defects through his support and mentorship at Camp Taylor, the Justin E. Rodgers Foundation for Lemierre's Awareness Inc., and his involvement in the Rotaract Club of Southern Sonoma County.
Lemierre's Syndrome is also known as the "forgotten disease" because of its rarity in past decades. This disease is a bacterial infection that was virtually wiped out during the age of antibiotics. It targets teenagers and young adults and has high mortality and morbidity rates. Specialists now believe that the apparent increase in cases is due to antibiotic resistance and changes in the antibiotic prescription patterns. Early recognition of Lemierre's is crucial to allow for immediate appropriate therapy, as this disease is known to progress very rapidly. Awareness of this disease being so low in the medical field and in the general population, the Lemierre's Awareness Night and fundraiser will be a fun, entertaining and informative event for those in this community.
Thank you for your time and we hope to see you at the Lemierre's Awareness Night on April 7th where you can be a part of the effort to save lives! Please contact Teresa at teresa_ogrady@yahoo.com for more information if you are interested in donating or have any other inquires.
Thank you!!
