NOT A GENUINE BLACK MAN
After smash runs Off Broadway and in Los Angeles, Brian Copeland brings his hit one man show to the Tabard Theatre Company at Theatre on San Pedro Square for four special performances only February 19th thru 22nd, 2009.
The book based on the show has been chosen as the 2009 pick for Silicon Valley Reads. All of Santa Clara County will be reading NOT A GENUINE BLACK MAN at the same time in January, February and March of 2009. Read the book then see the play!
Brian Copeland's first solo show, NOT A GENUINE BLACK MAN, reveals a little-known chapter of Bay Area history. In 1971, San Leandro was named one of the most racist suburbs in America. Congressional hearings were held. The next year, the then eight-year-old Brian Copeland and his African-American family moved to San Leandro. In a monologue that's both funny and poignant, Brian explores how surroundings make us who we are.
The critics say:
Copelands ability to captivate an audience rivals many a celebrated solo predecessor from Ruth Draper to Spalding Gray to Whoopi GoldbergCopeland is a GENUINE discovery.
-Los Angeles Times
a beautiful mix of wry humor and heartbreak, indignation and inspiration, a singular story of extreme isolation that speaks to anyone whos ever felt out of place.
-San Francisco Chronicle
"This is a wildly funny, agonizingly heart-wrenching presentation. This is a Jewel of a show!"
- Costa Times
"A GENUINE hit!!"
-San Jose Mercury News
Come see what all the shouting is about.
