Event
Rodgers and Hammerstein's FLOWER DRUM SONG by the Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra (CATS)
"Flower Drum Song" has been EXTENDED! Due to popular demand, we have added four additional performances on February 19 (7pm), February 20 (8pm) and February 21 (2pm and 8pm). A Hundred Million Miracles! in the making is what CATS is up to at the Nevada Theatre, in Nevada City. Led by our esteemed team of miracle workers that include Michael Baranowski (Director), Ken Hardin (Music Director) and George Jayne (Choreographer), CATS will be producing the Tony-nominated version by David Henry Hwang. Mr. Hwang updated the story in 2002 to bring in modern-day sensibilities, while maintaining the original spirit of the novel written by C.Y. Lee in 1957. FLOWER DRUM SONG was produced on Broadway in 1958 starring Pat Suzuki and directed by Gene Kelly. It was made into a movie in 1961, starring Nancy Kwan, James Shigeta, and the Myoshi Umeki. All the memorable songs are the same, including A Hundred Million Miracles, Grant Avenue, and I Enjoy Being a Girl. The original version focused on the generation gap in San Francisco's Chinatown between the elders from the old country and their Americanized children. The 2002 version takes the story a step further and is more introspective, but it is still a lot of fun with loads of singing and dancing accompanied by a live orchestra! On Friday, February 13, CATS will be holding a fundraiser of the 1961 movie at the Nevada Theatre. Come compare the two versions and clear your throats and sing along with the movie! You may also purchase tickets to the movie and sing-a-long at this website.
