Nathanson Creek Preserve and Parkway Outing--Urban Forest in Your Backyard
Join Mark Newhouser and Jessica Glatt to learn all about this urban forest in the heart of the City of Sonoma. After years of implementation, the Nathanson Creek Preserve, Parkway, and Demonstration Garden are prime examples of how degraded spaces can be restored and turned into thriving urban spaces.
The Nathanson Creek Preserve and Parkway is adjacent to Sonoma Valley High School and Adele Harrison Middle School, beginning from the Demonstration Garden located at MacArthur Street and 2nd Street East and follows the creek down to Napa Road. The Preserve is a prime example of how an urban forest can be restored to provide local flora and fauna with a rich habitat and healthy ecosystem.
Mr. Newhouser will discuss the collaboration, public process, and natural elements that went into making this park a reality, and Ms. Glatt will discuss the importance of having the sixth grade students from Adele Harrison Middle School help design everything from the landscape to the implementation of the plants and trees that currently make up this natural site.
This is a beginner level hike, and will happen rain or shine. There is no charge for this outing, as it is made possible by the voters of Sonoma County who funded the District's work with a quarter cent sales tax.
