"The Oldest Profession" by Paula Vogel
In "The Oldest Profession" we watch a squabbling sisterhood of five prostitutes who've worked together for 50 years weather the storm of social, economic, and political changes in the country (on the eve of Ronald Reagan's 1st election) over the course of many years.
These ladies of the night arrived in New York City years ago from New Orleans to set up shop: bossy, practical-minded Ursula; cheeky Edna and her best friend, the sweetly naive Vera; our flamboyant Lillian; and Mae, the elderly madam whose mind is starting to wander.
The interplay among the women is satisfying and at times quite poignant as they navigate their way through a career that parallels the trajectory of just about any labor job in America, minus the taxes and the social security.
