Holiday Lights Workshop
Since the winter is a dark season, with short days and long nights, many cultures feature festive lights in their winter holidays, from Christmas trees strung with lights to the Hanukkah Menorah burning for eight days and nights, to Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. This holiday season, come learn about some of the amazing properties of light through a special workshop from the Museum of Science and History at the Pink Palace and Dr. Ana Doblas from the University of Memphis Engineering Department. Experiment with lasers to see how they interact with different materials (including holiday gummies), create a fiber optic cable, blend colors together using motion, see the world burst into rainbows through diffraction gratings, and use light to create a festive holiday bag through cyanotyping, an early form of photography that develops before your eyes. After learning about how light works, join us in the planetarium for a special showing and Q&A of our holiday laser light show!
