Botany for Historians
Nov. 8, Sunday, 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. Understanding the curious ways of plants can provide fresh insights into significant events in human history. It can also raise questions: Why, for instance, did the U.S. Supreme Court rule in 1893 that a tomato was a vegetable when every botanist knows it's a fruit? Jim Folsom, Director of the Botanical Gardens, leads this lab-based class exploring plant characteristics through the lens of human needs and endeavors. Botanical Center, Brody Teaching Lab.
(Note: Participants will have a lunch break, and may bring a bag lunch or visit the Huntington cafe.)
