Keith Devlin: Video Games for Mathematics
Wednesday, October 9, 2013, 7:00-8:15 pm
Berkeley City College Auditorium
2050 Center Street, between Shattuck Ave. & Milvia St., in Berkeley (near the Downtown Berkeley BART station)

The Mathematical Sciences Research Institute and Berkeley City College cordially invite you to attend a lecture by Dr. Keith Devlin on "Video Games for Mathematics," which is part of the series Not on the Test: The Pleasures and Uses of Mathematics.  This lecture series is dedicated to engaging the public through speakers on mathematics whose expertise, passion, and ability to explain what they do with math can be understood by all.

Keith Devlin will show how casual games that provide representations of mathematics enable children (and adults) to learn basic mathematics by "playing," in the same way we learn music by learning to play the piano.  Prof. Devlin is a mathematician at Stanford University, a co-founder and executive director of the university's H-STAR institute, a co-founder of the Stanford Media X research network, a senior researcher at CSLI, and co-founder and president of InnerTube Games.  He is also known to National Public Radio listeners of Weekend Edition as "the Math Guy."

Please note:  You must present a printed or electronic ticket at the door to guarantee your seat in the auditorium.  Doors open at 6:00pm.
