The Macbeth Project
4THEATRSAKE's vocally and visually compelling new production of Shakespeare's bloody masterpiece opens on a devastated landscape. A crazed woman is dancing amongst the rubble of Rocinha, Brazil one of the most dangerous of the world's ghettos. Out of this debris of people's lives and deaths, a performance begins to emerge that blends capoeira, butoh, condomble, and passion:
By the pricking of my thumbs Something wicked this way comes
Oliver Pookrum, Founder and Artistic Director of Spirit Theatre (formerly African Renaissance Theater), plays the title role. Wyldchild L. Chemist, 4THEATRSAKE artistic director, will direct, guiding a cast which includes Kennikki Jones (Banquo), Karen Minard (Macduff), Angela Roberts (Lady Macbeth), and 4THEATRSAKE company members Ava Rodgers (Witch), Meghan Mott / Andrae Bicy (Malcolm), Bernard Causey (King Duncan), Sansa Sanyika (witch), Niseiki Macferrin (Witch), Joel Williams (Donalbain), Ramona Luehildrey (Hecate) and Rosanna Remeika (Lady Macduff).
Macbeth, (considered the most concise yet darkest of Shakespeares four tragedies), tells the tale of the heroic Scottish general, and his successful but ill-fated quest for the throne of Scotland. In the play, Macbeth (Pookrum) and fellow general Banquo (Jones) are visited by three witches, who prophesy that Macbeth will become Thane (Lord) of Cawdor and then King. As first part of the prophesies begin to come true, Lady Macbeth (Roberts) persuades her husband to murder King Duncan (Causey) and become King sooner - rather than later. This bloody deed sets off a series of more bloody deeds, as Macbeths ambition and quest for power grows. Believing to be invincible, Macbeth faces off with Macduff (Minard), and is ultimately defeated. This is a morality tale, says Wyldchild L. Chemist. Certainly the play suggests that there are those who would commit truly terrible crimes in seeking the power they desire. It also, on some level, indicts those who allow these atrocities to take place without taking arms against them. Some might say this is true of those surrounding Saddam Hussein, and yet there are those who might say it is also true of those people in support of George Bush and his leadership. I make no claims to either assumption. However, it does seem that especially in times of turmoil, society is dangerously vulnerable to the suggestion of those who seek power. Macbeth features some of the most memorable and oft-quoted lines from Shakespeare, including "Out, damned spot!, "Double, double, toil and trouble," Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow... and "By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes . . ," and Fair is foul and foul is fair.
