Lunch & Learn: Healthy Parents, Healthy Schools
Children in Chicago's Latino communities face staggering rates of asthma and obesity. In 2004, the Partnership to Reduce Disparities in Asthma and Obesity in Latino Schools launched an intensive four-year campaign to empower parents in Chicago's Latino communities to bring about changes in school food and fitness so that children will have the opportunity to live healthy, successful lives.
Four years later, parents have transformed the wellness environment in their children's schools and in the community.
Healthy Schools Campaign is pleased to announce a special Lunch & Learn event highlighting parents experiences and the Partnerships findings. Well hear from community leaders, university researchers and the parents who raised their voices for change.
Speakers include:
* Rochelle Davis, founding executive director of the Healthy Schools Campaign and the Partnerships principal investigator
* Jovita Flores, project coordinator for Parents United for Healthy Schools and community organizer in Little Village
* Guillermo Gomez, Chicago director of the Healthy Schools Campaign and project director for the Partnership
* Idida Perez, executive director of West Town Leadership United
* Dr. Dianne Rucinski, project evaluator, of the University of Illinois at Chicago
Attendees will also learn about how the projects success is continuing through the work of Parents United for Healthy Schools and school wellness teams throughout Chicago.
