The AIDS epidemic reaches its height in the late 1980s, with New York one of the cities worst hit. Those suffering most are the bohemians: the rockers, the filmmakers and the strippers - the demographics to whom society seems to turn a blind eye during their time of greatest need.
Rent draws beautifully on seminal forerunners like Paris Is Burning to issue an impassioned rallying cry to those artists whose forms of expression have never been so important.
