Sleeping Beauty
In an Imaginary Kingdom, King Florestan and his Queen have invited all the Fairies to be present as Godmothers at the Christening of the infant Princess Aurora. Just as the Fairies are bestowing their special gifts, the wicked and powerful Fairy Carabosse arrives and is furious because she was not invited. In a rage, she announces her curse: "When Aurora is eighteen, she will prick her finger and die." The Lilac Fairy still has her own gift to bestow and promises that Aurora shall not die, but fall into a deep sleep from which she shall be awakened after a hundred years by a kiss from a prince. The Palace gardens are filled with preparations for Princess Aurora's eighteenth birthday. The King is horrified that one of the villagers is knitting as all needles and spindles have been forbidden in the palace. The Queen intervenes and in honor of the day, the offender is pardoned. Four Princes arrive to seek Aurora's hand in marriage. During the festivities an old woman approaches and gives Aurora a spindle hidden in a bouquet. while dancing with it, she pricks her finger and collapses. The old woman throws back her cloak, revealing that she is Carabosse, and vanishes. The Lilac Fairy appears to fulfill her promise and casts a spell of sleep over all those present. A hundred years have passed and young Prince Florimund is hunting in the forest. He meets a group of peasants and stops for a rest. The Prince tires of his companions and dismisses them. He dreams of an ideal love. The Lilac Fairy appears and tells him the story of the Sleeping Beauty and summons the vision of Princess Aurora to appear before him. Prince Florimund implores the Lilac Fairy to lead him to where she sleeps. She takes him on a journey to the palace. Prince Florimund finds Sleeping Beauty and awakens her with a kiss.
