Julius Caesar
In Julius Caesar, Shakespeare portrays the critical moment in history when the Roman Republic is destroyed, laying the foundations for the development of the Roman Empire. It is a play in which heroes suffer from fatal flaws and villains defy the label with their humanity: envious and manipulating Cassius becomes a faithful friend; noble Brutus becomes an assassin, murdering a man he loves; Mark Antony, the reveler, becomes an avenging general and instigates anarchy and chaos; Julius Caesar, the most powerful and brilliant man in the western world, becomes a ghost and a powerful memory. The tension is great, the language clear and beautiful, yet all is misconstrued.

Friendship and betrayal, the state and the individual, the leaders and the citizens, the public and the private, theoretic ideals and practical realitiesShakespeare dramatizes the issues that have built and destroyed nations over and over again, suggesting that politics and leaders and insurrections have changed little over the millennia.
