loadbang Presents: Plays Well With Other
Wednesday, February 26th at 7:30PM at the Hebrew Tabernacle in Washington Heights, inventive (New York Times) chamber ensemble loadbang (trumpet, trombone, bass clarinet, baritone voice) is joined by a string ensemble made up of some of New Yorks finest musicians under the direction of conductor Eduardo Leandro to perform Plays Well With Others.

This concert is part of an ongoing project commissioning concerto grossos for loadbang with string orchestra, with most of these works receiving their first New York performance.

Heather Stebbins expertly mixes the sound of loadbang, the string orchestra, and an evocative electronics part, rattling and rumbling along with the extended techniques of the live instruments, in her new work Riven. Eve Beglarians You See Where This Is Going is a rigidly serial work from this most emotional and expressive of composers, built around the poetic and musical image of a rose. Beglarian constructs the harmony and rhythm of the piece around a rose-shaped equation, while beautifully illuminating the poetic text about the nature of names and meaning.

Reiko Fütings mo(nu)ment for C is a palimpsest, layering a solo work for loadbang with strings, and layering quotes and fragments from Mahler and Ives to create a rhythmically propulsive work. Scott Wollschlegers CVS is part of a series of works where the composer highlights mundane elements of American culture, elevating them with a kind of Robert Ashley-tinged irony and care. The singer intones the name of the ubiquitous chain drugstore, as the music loops and turns back on itself in hallucinogenic wanderings. loadbang is also proud to premiere a new work by Paula Matthusen, the composer of the eponymous Old Fires Catch Old Buildings from their most recent album. Matthusens work is concerned with field recordings, and discrepancies in musical space.
