Rural Cultural Competence Serving Rural Communities with Mary Maruscak
Do you provide (or plan to provide) services to rural communities or individuals and families residing in rural communities? This workshop will equip you with cultural competence in working with people from rural areas.
Attendees will: Understand the common characteristics of rural culture and how it can impact service delivery Learn about the research around rural provision of services and how it may affect provider perceptions and service practices Enhance your skills in communicating with people from rural backgrounds Learn about the important connection of health literacy and cultural competence
Attendees will leave the workshop with valuable resources to evaluate and improve individual and organizational rural cultural competence as well as a new network of professionals to help with further program development.

About the Presenter Originally hailing from the Finger Lakes area of NY State, Mary holds a Bachelor's degree in Psychology with a special focus on children and families from Keuka College. She relocated to the Binghamton area to receive her Masters in Public Administration in 2013 and completed a Certificate in Public Health Fundamentals and Principles from the University at Albany in 2017.
Mary's professional interests include health education, epidemiology, and the social determinants of health and their relationship to health outcomes and quality of life, particularly in rural communities. Mary was appointed Director of Community Health Education in November, 2018 at Rural Health Network of South Central New York (RHNSCNY). She coordinates the delivery of evidence-based programs designed to build skills, knowledge and capacity both for community members and RHNSCNY's community partners, including the Chronic Disease Self Management Program, Whole Health Action Management, Health Literacy, and Rural Cultural Competence.
Rural Health Networks Rural Cultural Competence training module is designed for professional development and provides a broad overview of the determinants and disparities impacting rural individuals, families, and communities. The module includes an in-depth discussion about ways to evaluate programs and establish more culturally competent service delivery in rural areas.
