Ad astra per aspera
In response to city, county, and state guidelines we are cancelling this performance. New performance dates will be determined when the significant health risks of attending large social events have subsided. Thank you for your interest and understanding.
_________ In this new evening-length duet, Co-artistic Director Christin Call performs with Coriolis newcomer Dustin Durham in a surreal memoir of one womans journey through the divine darkness of erotic liberation. A meditative romp of roleplay and consensual power dynamics, the exuberant neon of the city and boundless depths of the ocean landscape at night create a limitless arena for a couple to discover and explore their desires. However, part of her journey must toggle the landscape of the past as well as the present. Ad astra per aspera is titled after the motto of Calls home state of Kansas and means to the stars through difficulties. In reverse reflection of the ocean and city landscape is a penetrating look at growing up on the sun-seared, small-town plains of the Midwest. She must confront how the persistent myth of the Wild West was hardening and rapidly transforming into religious fundamentalism in the 90s. Vulnerable memories reveal where shame induced suppression, provoked purity codes, and reinforced gender norms. Call employs her assemblage style, layering mixed media for a full-sensory experience, to tell this story through film, poetic dialogue, animal masks, aerial suspension, and contemporary ballet. She is joined by musical collaborator Michael Hamm, who has created a vivid original score, and Hungarian artist Zoltan Katonas stunning and evocative film photography. Stylishly woven together with stark imagery and bold details, Ad astra examines our nations geographical, moralistic divide from a viewpoint of having lived on both sides. Her awakening into an oceanic self-possession of her own beliefs and desires is an inexhaustible process of integration that, in the words of Philosopher/Cognitive Scientist John Vervaeke, feels like making love to reality.
