Grand Guignol Evening with the Grand Guignolers
In our signature style, the Grand Guignolers' 1920s Parisian themed company welcomes guests in a cocktail party atmosphere to enjoy absinthe, drinks and treats in an evening of the classic horror plays of the Theatre du Grand Guignol from early 20th Century Paris. Known as the Theatre of Laughter and Terror, an evening alternated drama, farce and horror and were famous for its special effects. This is a rare opportunity to experience the suspense horror plays that were the pre-curser to film noir, German Expressionism, and the contemporary horror films.
The Grand Guignolers, based in Hollywood, create original productions mixing traditional theatrical genres: commedia dell'arte, melodrama, puppetry, dance, Grand Guignol, clown, vaudeville, and magic. Past productions have included A Grand Guignol Children's Show* (*NOT for Children) and Absinthe, Opium and Magic: 1920s Shanghai performed at ArtWorks Theatre and The Actors' Gang. This recent production just performed at the Pasadena Playhouse for Cirque-a-Palooza.
This evening includes The Final Kiss about an ex-lover who visits the man whose face she had burned with acid for a "final kiss." and The Crime in the Madhouse about a young woman desperately trying to escape disturbed and threatening old crones who have issue with an apparent cuckoo bird trapped in the young girl's head.
The show is not appropriate for children due to violence and very naughty French existentially-challenged finger puppets.
ATTIRE: Vintage cocktail attire encouraged.
