Channelling the abrasive spirit of suburban youth found in predecessors like La Haine, Girlhood is an extraordinary study of one African-French teenagers transition to womanhood. Marieme struggles at school and is abused by her brother, leading her to seek companionship in a group of girls who live on her estate. They love, live and laugh together, before petty crime begins to complicate matters.
Complete with Céline Sciammas typically deep explorations of race, gender and class, this is engrossing realism at its finest.
