Kamloops Public Market Cooperative Co-op Cafe Series: Investment Co-ops
Community Investment Co-ops (CICs) are a new and innovative support system for rural and urban economic and business development that effectively bridge the gap between local investors and local ventures in need of financing. CICs are a cost effective, community owned and controlled impact fund. They enable residents to become partners in locally driven economic development, which leads to stronger and more sustainable economies. In other words, local money wont be in stocks and mutual funds, but more importantly in local projects and people.
Daphane Nelson will present on cooperatives generally for the first 35-45 minutes. Ms. Nelson is a Director with Interior Savings Credit Union and a founding Director with the Kamloops Public Market Cooperative. Her passion for the cooperative model prompted her to take a cooperative development course to facilitate conversations within the BC Interior about the cooperative model.
Gordon Borgstrom, the Executive Director of SIBAC/BC Rural Centre, will explain the Community Investment Co-op model and discuss how or whether this model is right for Kamloops. Passionate about rural development and rural communities, Gordon has over 30 years of experience working in various aspects of community development. His professional experience includes working at one of Canadas first community development corporations, and senior management positions in both the federal and provincial governments. Gordons employment has afforded him the wonderful opportunity to travel to, and work with, communities in almost every region of British Columbia.
