Black Voices Presents: Teaching for Black Lives
Join us as we discuss the history behind teaching Black History in schools and the current push for Ethnic Studies with Garfield HS educator Jesse Hagopian and Shoreline Schools Equity & Family Engagement Director, Dr. Tanisha Brandon-Felder.
About Tanisha Brandon-Felder, Ed.D:
Tanisha Brandon-Felder is currently the Director of Equity and Family Engagement in the Shoreline School District. An educator in the Seattle Public Schools for 16 years, Dr. Brandon-Felder specializes in race and equity, culturally responsive practices and, primarily the achievement and opportunity gap occurring with Black and Brown students. A graduate of both Grambling State and University of Washington she focuses on equitable leadership with adults. Dr. Brandon-Felder piloted the Creative Schools Initiative through Arts Corps and is a firm believer that the arts create pathways for student engagement and academic success. is Identifying all the ways in which we can build strong learning partnerships with students key to ensuring equitable outcomes for students. Dr. Brandon-Felder is committed to transforming institutional practices one system at a time.
About Jesse Hagopian:
Jesse Hagopian teaches Ethnic Studies and is co-adviser to the Garfield Black Student Union. Hagopian is an editor for the social justice periodical Rethinking Schools and is the co-editor of the book, Teaching for Black Lives. Jesse is an organizer with the Black Lives Matter at School movement and is a founding member of Social Equity Educators (SEE). He is the recipient of the 2015 NAACP Service Award and organizes with NFL pro-bowler Michael Bennett and other professional athletes who protest injustice, dialog with student-athletes about gender equity, healthy relationships, sexual assault and consent. Hagopian has been a frequent special guest contributor to the Seattle Times op-ed page.
