Advanced Youth Backpacking Camp

Advanced Youth Backpacking Trek June 29- July 2, 2020, Sugarloaf Ridge State Park Ages 13 to 17 Cost: $430 SEC members/$470 non-members This small-group program is dedicated to middle school and high school students that have some experience in camping, and the ability to hike several miles per day up steep inclines. This is considered a strenuous backpacking trip that will circumference Hood Mountain and Sugarloaf Park over 4 days. The trip will begin in Sugarloaf, summit Bald Mountain and then drop down into the McCormick Addition. The group will them summit back over Hood Mountain and finish at Sugarloaf. Distance will range from 5-7 miles per day with up to 1500 feet elevation gains. The course will push participants to some incredible scenery, gorgeous vistas and rarely traversed backcountry of the Mayacama Mountains. Food and all backpacking gear are included. Participants will learn advanced Light and Ultralight backpacking strategies, simple wilderness first aid, and wilderness ethics, while also being immersed in the ecology of the Mayacama Mountains with interpretation from guides. This camp encourages long-lasting memories, appreciation for the outdoors, and a better awareness of ourselves and the world around us.
