The Steward of Christendom
Sebastian Barry explores the experience of his great-grandfather, Thomas Dunne, the last Catholic chief of the Dublin Metropolitan Police in the years before Irish Independence in 1922.Known as a "castle Catholic," Dunne is not a comfortable ancestor and Barry reveals Dunne's story with compassion and honesty.
Now trapped in a small room in a mental institution, Dunne is left with his memories. Evocative of Lear, Dunne struggles to come to terms with his history and himself.
Sebastian Barry's beautiful and devastating memory play will stay with us for many years." New York Times
