NLW Distinguished Author - Reception Dinner
The Friends and Foundation of the Albany Public Library welcome acclaimed journalist and author Jeff Sharlet to deliver the 2020 National Library Week Distinguished Author Lecture on Wednesday, April 22, 2020. All are invited to a reception and dinner before the lecture to be held at the University Club of Albany. The reception dinner will be followed by a lecture and book signing to be held at the Washington Ave Branch of the Albany Public Library.
Jeff Sharlet is the author of the 2008 book, "THE FAMILY: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power," which became a five-part Netflix documentary series in 2019. THE FAMILY explores the most powerful and most weirdly secretive Christian conservative organization in Washington. In February 2020, Jeff will publish his seventh book: THIS BRILLIANT DARKNESS [W. W. Norton & Company]. In the spirit of James Agee and W. G. Sebald, THIS BRILLIANT DARKNESS is collection of images and reflections framed by the two years between his fathers heart attack and his owna time defined by insomnia and late-night driving and the companionship of other darkness-dwellers: night bakers and last-call drinkers, frightened people and frightening people, the homeless and the lost (or merely disoriented), addicts and people on the margins.
