Did you know that in the 1920's, Avila Beach and Port San Luis were the largest exporters of oil in the world?

Or that during the 1960's and 70's, Port San Luis Harbor District leaders and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers developed a plan never realized to construct a detached breakwater, add landfill and create a recreational marina with slips for about 1,300 pleasure craft?

Or that the Point San Luis Lighthouse, built in 1890, contained a glass lens shipped from France that was capable of projecting light nearly 20 miles out to sea?

This course will cover a brief history of the Port. You will also learn about its current operations. Responsibility for this area is much more extensive than simply supervising the Harford Pier and the harbor. Andrea Lueker, the Harbor Manager, and her staff will describe what they have to do to manage the whole district that extends to the Avila Lighthouse and Pirates Cove, rescue operations in coordination with Cal Fire and the SLO County Sheriffs office, and much more. Andrea will also discuss plans for development of Harbor Terrace, and the futures for Avila Pier and the dog beach.

Andrea Lueker is the Harbor Manager at Port San Luis Harbor District, a post she has held for the past five years. Prior to this position, she worked for the City of Morro Bay for 27 years, the last six years as City Manager. She has a masters degree from Cal Poly and an undergraduate degree from Colorado State University.
