Best Practices in Prevention, Identification and Treatment of Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders- Tri-Cities

Learn how to effectively identify and screen parents experiencing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. This two-day training is appropriate for a range of providers, including OBs, pediatricians, midwives, RNs, social workers, mental health therapists, doulas, public health employees, home visitors, IBCLCs, and more.
We had to cancel the afternoon breakout session for prescribers but you are still welcome to attend the rest of the training.
This training is offered by Perinatal Support WA through a grant from Strengthening Families Washington at the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) and generously hosted by Kadlec Regional Medical Center.
Objectives of this training:
Thursday, January 30th: Basic Topics
*Understand the "real" transition to parenthood.
*Know the spectrum of perinatal mental health disorders.
*Know the risk factors for PMADs.
*Know key prevention strategies.
*Understand high risk populations and health disparities.
*Become knowledgeable about the impacts of perinatal mental health
on families and communities.
*Know the components of a treatment plan.
*Be able to effectively talk about, and screen new/expectant
parents for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.
Friday, January 31st: Advanced Topics
*Understand the impact of birth experiences on postpartum
emotional health.
*Become knowledgeable about risk and symptoms for partners and
fathers.
*Become knowledgeable about psychiatric medications during pregnancy
and breastfeeding.
*Become knowledgeable about supporting families in the NICU
*Become knowledgeable about feeding issues and perinatal mental health.
*Understand the impact on infant and children.
*Understand impacts on partners and relationships.
More than a two day training, we hope this will begin an ongoing conversation and collaboration with partners in Washington, particularly those representing under-served communities.

13.5 CEUs approved for MSWs, MAs, MFTs. This Program has been approved for 13.5 CEUs for Licensed Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists by the Washington State Society for Clinical Social Work.
13.5 Contact hours for RNs: Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 17084 for 13.5 contact hours.
Heidi Koss, LMHC is a psychotherapist in private practice, serving individuals, couples and families, with an emphasis on pregnancy and postpartum mood disorders, birth trauma, as well as treating other related birth issues.
Heidi has contributed to the field of perinatal mental health in many ways over her career. She is the Co-Founder of the Northwest Association for Postpartum Support (NAPS). She served on the WA state leadership advisory committee for the Speak Up When Youre Down Postpartum Depression Awareness Campaign and has been an instructor at the Seattle Midwifery School for their PPMD course. She has collaborated on a PPMD training curriculum with the University of WA School of Nursing Infant Mental Health and Development Program and the Washington State Department of Health First Steps Division. She has been a Certified Postpartum Doula and Certified Lactation Educator for over twelve years, and the recipient of the prestigious DONA International Penny Simkin Award in 2006. Heidi is also the proud mother of 2 beautiful daughters.
Mia is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in Seattle, WA. Mia has worked with families for more than 20 years, specializing in perinatal mental health. Mia is the Clinical Director at Perinatal Support WA a statewide non-profit dedicated to supporting families impacted by perinatal mental health complications and training professionals in best practices in the field. Mia is a master trainer in Group Peer Support for Perinatal Parents, an evidenced informed peer support group model and regularly presents on this model at conferences and trainings. In addition, Mia maintains a small private practice focused on perinatal mental health which helps her stay up to date on current issues impacting parents and keeps her clinical skills sharp.
