More and more, gender diverse people are becoming part of our youth groups, Sunday School classes and congregations. As clergy, staff or a lay leader, are you ready to minister effectively to these individuals AND their loved ones? If you are a chaplain or pastoral counselor, are you equipped to provide support for the trans and non-binary people in your care?
In this workshop - through a combination of engaging presentation, discussion, activities, Q&A, video clips and personal stories - you will:
- Learn what the Bible says in support of gender diverse people - Be equipped to meet the pastoral care needs of trans children, youth and adults, and their loved ones - Get resources and suggestions for welcoming trans people and their families into your spaces - Learn how cultural assumptions about gender impact our under- standing of trans and non-binary people - Understand trans-related terms and the transitioning process for gender diverse children, youth and adults - Know how to interact respectfully with trans and and non-binary people
The workshop will run from 10:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and LUNCH will be provided.
The Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta has approved this training for 5 contact hours of Continuing Education credit.
As an added bonus, you are invited to tour the Toco Hills Community Alliance's newly renovated facility, located on the grounds of St. Bart's. The tour will be led by THCA's Executive Director, Rev. Lisa Heilig, before the workshop (9:15-9:45 a.m.).
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP FACILITATORS
Rev. Linda Herzer and Gabrielle Claiborne are co-founders of Transformation Journeys Worldwide, a transgender-focused inclusion training and consulting firm. They travel nationally helping corporations, non-profits, medical and mental healthcare providers, and religious and educational institutions transform their environments into trans and non-binary inclusive cultures.
Gabrielle has been an out and active trans woman since 2010. Along with being a lifelong church leader, she served for 5 years on the Executive Board of Atlanta Pride. Gabrielle currently serves on the Trans Task Force of the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce, on the City of Atlantas LGBTQ Mayoral Advisory Council, and on the Board of the OUT Georgia Business Alliance. The Atlanta Business Chronicle honored her as their 2019 Outstanding Voice for Diversity and Inclusion, and in 2018 her work was featured in Forbes.
Rev. Linda became an advocate for gender diverse people after serving a church with a large trans population. She has also facilitated support groups for gender diverse youth and adults, and their parents and spouses. In 2016, Pilgrim Press published her first book, The Bible and the Transgender Experience: How Scripture Supports Gender Variance.
Rev. Linda's book will be available for purchase ($18) at the workshop.
