Old-fashioned, naughty, everything! A Glimpse of Emily Dickinson
Subterranean Shakespeare Presents:
"Old-fashioned, naughty, everything!" A Glimpse of Emily Dickinson, based entirely on Emilys poems and letters, starring Chetana Karel-Michaan. Co-written by Andrea Adler and Chetana Karel-Michaan.

Shakespearean actress Chetana Karel-Michaan, Americas leading theatrical interpreter of Emily Dickinson, will bring her solo performance of Emily, the most important American poet of the 19th century, for one night only to the Berkeley City Club, on Saturday, January 11, 2020, at 7:00 p.m. The show will be presented in the 2nd floor site-specific atmospheric library. The audience seating will be on comfortable couches and chairs.

Emily Dickinson, the famously reclusive poet, was extremely prolific, with most of her poems and letters published posthumously. Her poetry is now considered among the finest in the English language, and Emily Dickinson is now understood to be a serious artist whose intellectual curiosity and emotional intensity are expressed in her concise and compelling poems that capture a range of human experiences.

Karel-Michaan interprets Emily with a deep empathy for the poets intelligence and overarching spirituality, transforming the nearly bare stage into an intimate space, bringing to vibrant life Emilys poems and letters.

Karel-Michaan says, Emily has been my inspiration and my guide for many years. She touches my heart like no other poet but Shakespeare, and I live by her words: My business is to love, and, We turn not older with years, but newer every day.
