The second staged reading in our 2013 Summer Classics Series: Henrik Ibsen's play, Ghosts
Set in Norway during the late 1800's, Ibsen's play, Ghosts, focuses on the life of Mrs. Alving, a strong-willed and capable woman, seemingly trapped in the chauvinistic culture of her time. As the play unfolds we discover how independent and self -reliant Mrs. Alving has been her whole life, and how outward appearances galvanize the perceptions of the others in her community.

As in the plays of O'Neil, Chekhov, and Shaw, Ibsen's characters brilliantly personify the opposing forces at work in times of radical social change. Their plays herald the arrival of the modern woman in contemporary drama. Ibsen's plays are also noted for their realism, fostering the emergence of a new style in World Theater.

In Ghosts, Ibsen presents a woman, full of vitality who is clearly more intelligent than the men around her. Mrs. Alving represents the hope of a new perspective played against the legacy of a corrupt social order. Watching this play, we can appreciate the many strong willed, unsung women whose intelligence and perseverance laid the groundwork for today's more equal civil rights between the sexes. It reminds us of how insipient sexism remains in our culture today.
