Hamsam-Damayanthi ( The Golden Swan & Princess Damayanthi)
Nalacharitham is a Kathakali play written by Unnai warrier. Based on the Mahabharatha, it tells the love story of King Nalan and his consort Damayanthi. Princess of the Vidarbha Kingdom, Damayanti was extolled for her beauty. Nala, the king of Nishadha kingdom hears about the beauty and virtue of princess Damayanthi, fell in love with her and wishes to marry her. The part of the story being portrayed during the show is about the golden swan who serves as messenger to unite Princess Damayanthi and King Nala. The swan would sing praises of Nala to Damayanti and help her affirm her love for Nala. The Swan promises the princess that he will convey her message to Nala and then flies away to Nishadha kingdom.
