Patterns over Practices: The Spirit of Scrum
When: Wednesday July 31, 2019 6:30-8:30 pm Est
Where: Scrum.org 131 Middlesex Turnpike, Burlington, MA 01803
Scrum is a game as stated on the cover of the Scrum Guide: "The Definitive Guide to Scrum: The Rules of the Game".
But does simply following the rules of the game guarantee that you play the game well? To play any game well, you must understand the rules for sure, but you also must have the necessary skills, experience and strategy.
Theres a new trend underway. It is the move away from rules & practices and towards PATTERNS. A Pattern is informed by core principles, and in turn the Pattern informs specific practices. Patterns are now a VERY BIG DEAL. Get the patterns right, and the practices take care of themselves. But focusing on practices alone can get you into trouble!
In this presentation, we will introduce you to several Scrum Patterns that are part of a new book titled "A Scrum Book: The Spirit of the Game" by Jeff Sutherland and James Coplien. This book presents a new perspective on Scrum; that Scrum is a framework that enables the execution of patterns that address specific impediments to achieving the results that Scrum promises.
Patterns discussed will include:
* The interrupt pattern
* Small & Stable team pattern
* High Value First pattern
And several more!
As Jeff Sutherland has recently stated: "The spirit of Scrum is to eliminate impediments that block productivity or the ability of the team to perform, including anything that negatively impacts the happiness of the team. The spirit of Scrum is to put the customer first, to delight them, to deliver amazing products that change their lives at a low enough cost that anyone can have them. The Spirit of Scrum is to improve organizational performance so that jobs are created, leadership is developed, and investors are rewarded. Anything not in this spirit which people call "Scrum" is a travesty."
