Collecting Native Seeds

Are you looking to enhance your landscape with native species to attract birds, butterflies, and other pollinators? Join us for a native plant walk and wild seed collection with professional native plant propagator and landscape designer Adam Kohl. As we explore the grounds at and around the UMass Agricultural Learning Center we will identify and demonstrate seed collection from the following species: New York Ironweed, Joe Pye Weed, Bee Balm, Spicebush, Hazelnut, Mountain Mint, NJ Tea, Staghorn Sumac, Jack-in-the-Pulpit, False Solomons Seal, Jewelweed, and Maple-Leaf Viburnum.

We will follow the collection walk with seed cleaning exercises and demonstrations. The group will learn how to clean, store and cold stratify seeds, emphasizing specific needs for different species.

People are likely to be able to go home with seeds of: Bee Balm, Jewelweed, Staghorn Sumac, Joe Pye Weed, and N.Y. Ironweed. Quantity and type of seeds available for participants will vary.
