Wealthy Baptista has two daughters. The youngest, Bianca: a modest maid, fair and virtuous. The eldest, Kate: an "irksome, brawling scold", famous for her vicious tongue. When three suitors come to Padua vying for Bianca's hand in marriage, Baptista will have none of them. Not until Kate is married and provided for.
