Dani Shapiro at Boswell for Inheritance
Registration has closed for this event, but we're not at capacity. We'd love to see you at this event at Boswell tonight at 7 pm.
Acclaimed memoirist Dani Shapiro is coming to Boswell for her New York Times bestselling book Inheritance: A Memoir of Genealogy, Paternity, and Love. This event takes place on Tuesday, June 18, 7 pm, and is cosponsored by the Sam and Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies at UWM and the Harry and Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center.
Registration is free at shapiromke.bpt.me or upgrade to a book purchase, which includes registration.
Inheritance is "an emotional detective story" (NPR) that begins when Shapiro receives the results of a DNA test and notes that some of her relatives don't match up. She woke up one morning and her entire history - the life she had lived - crumbled beneath her.
What she finds is a secret family history of how she was conceived, a revelation that will have implications for many other families who engaged the services of fertility clinics. The scientific breakthroughs in DNA testing have led to at-the-time unimaginable discoveries.
As Ruth Franklin writes in The New York Times Book Review, "The true drama of Inheritance is not Shapiro's discovery of her father's identity but the meaning she makes of it."
And as Laurie Hertzel writes in the Star-Tribune: "Shapiro's book is a wise and thorough examination of how this news affected her. She is a good guide for the bombshells that are yet to explode for so many families."
Thank you for registering for this free event - it will allow us to set the store for the right attendance. We should note that if are close to capacity, we'll check people in and give priority to folks who've registered. You can also upgrade to a book with ticket, which includes registration.
The book-with-ticket upgrade is not refundable after June 17.
