ACA Safety Facilitator and rescue session
VENUE CHANGE DUE TO FLOODING! We will be at Cuivre River State Park in Troy, MO instead of Riverlands in West Alton, MO. Camping is available if you let us know at least a week in advance at email@example.com
Would you like to be able to reenter your kayak if you fall out? Maybe you are good in your boat but would you feel more comfortable in a race if you knew safe ways to help a fellow kayaker who ends up in the river? The Mississippi River Water Trail Association is offering an American Canoe Association (ACA) Safety Facilitator Certification and beginning self and assisted rescue skills clinic for kayakers. Our Level 2 ACA River Kayak Instructors and Safety Facilitator Endorsed educators will spend the day with you helping you build your skills and knowledge on river safety and rescue, especially on big rivers.
The one-year ACA Safety Facilitator class gives you kayak safety information including how to do boat and lifejacket fitting. There is a lot of good information in this class and if you want more details on that part of the day, check the ACA website. On water, our ACA Instructors will cover hazards in the big rivers and what to do if you encounter them, self and assisted rescues, towing, getting help, avoiding barges and motorboats, helping others, and more.
The day starts at 8:30 a.m.at the Cuivre River State Park Visitor Center, 678 Mo-147, Troy, MO 63379. You need to bring your boat, lifejacket, paddle, spray skirt if you have one, and other safety gear that you have. Pack your rain gear, lunch, snacks, water, noseplugs if you want them, and everything else you need for a long day on the river.
If you want the one year official certification from the ACA as a Safety Facilitator, you must join or be a full member of the ACA and pass the class. You may take the class without going for certification if you prefer. Non ACA members will be asked to pay $5 per person for insurance.
