Vaskadzi means women in Shona. Shona is a language in Zimbabwe. MufukaWorks Dance Co. -An Afro Russe Dance Co. (fusion of Zimbabwean African, Ballet, and Contemporary) tells the story of the experience of women in life and takes you through the journey. MufukaWorks Dance Co.-An Afro Russe Dance Co. was developed by Elsie Mufuka (BA in Dance and Communications from Coker College) from Gardens Corner, SC in 2010 with the inspiration of providing dance education and performances for the community. MufukaWorks has provided high art cultural dance experience through Afro Russe Dance (fusion of Zimbabwean African, Ballet, and Contemporary). This inspiration; grounded in Mufukas Zimbabwean lineage, professional experience, and international travels, has afforded the opportunity to offer dance education programs and performances within diverse communities. MufukaWorks has taught dance education programs to Burton Wells Recreation Center, Albemarle Road Recreation Center, Whale Branch Elementary, Bluffton School of Dance, Johnson C. Smith University, and Charlotte Dance Festival. Through MufukaWorks Elite Root Professional dancers, MufukaWorks has brought dance performances to the International House, Lexington International Festival, Gullah Festival, Piccolo Spoleto, Links Inc., Levine Childrens Hospital, Charlotte Emerging Young Artist Dance Festival, Coker College repertory, University of SC Beaufort, Women Fest, Loose Leaf Festival, and Charlotte New Music Festival, just to mention a few. The Company repertory is Return to Sender, One Blood, Our World: the stories of our community, Invisible, and I AM. Mufuka is an active member of the community as dance teacher of Benton Heights Elementary, Charlotte Ballet, and Ebb & Flow Movement. Mufuka was awarded 2018 Outstanding Young Alumni of Coker College. MufukaWorks mission is to use dance as a vehicle to tell stories.
