Music without Borders
Borders come in different forms: some are physical, able to be torn down brick-by-brick. Others are not so easy to see, yet these relatively invisible social borders are just as capable of being deconstructed once we recognize them. This concert will bring to light some of those invisible societal borders faced by musicians and composers who found themselves walled off due to their gender, sexual identity, nationality, politics, and/or religion. The music and stories of Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, Bernstein, Copland, Oliveros, and Crawford will demonstrate a variety of ways these individuals navigated and addressed the social borders thrust upon them.
