Things That Need To Be Done
"Things That Need To Be Done" is a durational dance that explores the subject of high functioning mental illness, and the ways it forces an individual to operate. Over the span of 6 hours, one dancer navigates non-emotional studies of effort through poignant and fine tuned movement, manipulation of physical materials, and a jam session to a 60s playlist. Through building and breaking patterns, this work bears the question, how much of my illness is my identity?

Lynn Tofil (creator) is a choreographer, dancer, and writer interested in art with an allegiance to truth. She has worked in Seattle since 2014, with artists such as Pat Graney, Wade Madsen, and Dylan Ward, among others. She is currently a member of HYPERNOVA Contemporary Dance Company. She directed and produced her dance film, "Trials & Errors", in 2014 in Detroit, Michigan. That same year, she received her BS degree in dance from Wayne State University. She is a 2018 Artist Trust GAP Grantee to fund her first independent production, "Things That Need To Be Done". She writes about dance for SeattleDances.com. Alongside her dance work, she teaches Pilates regularly in the Seattle area.

Alexandra Beatty Spencer (collaborator/performer) is an artist invested in the revelatory practice of creation. She weaves a performative home in the articulation between movement and language. Since moving to Seattle, she has pursued movement practice with intent to establish dialogues between body, mind, and spirit. She shares these integrations as creator and performer, and believes in them as personal and pleasurable labor. She has performed locally in work by Kaitlin McCarthy, Britt Karhoff, Maya Soto, and Karin Stevens, among others; and presented her work "No Lack" through Ktisk Contemporary Dance in 2017.

"Things That Need To Be Done" received partial funding from Artist Trust, and will have a sound score produced by Rew Winter.
