Join Centennial Youth Ballet for Mosaic, a mixed-bill performance of classical and contemporary ballet works at the Z. Alexander Looby Theater, April 26-28. Jennifer McNamaras "the heart is an organ of fire" takes its title from Michael Ondaatjes magnificent book, "The English Patient". McNamara originally choreographed the piece for Vanderbilt Dance Theatre during the 2015/16 school year based on the given theme creating change. She was immediately drawn to Stravinskys "Firebird" for the score and wanted to use the legend of the Phoenix that rises from its own ashes as a basis for the story. She framed the original piece as an exploration of the struggles in a relationship between a man and a woman. In re-staging the piece for Centennial Youth Ballet, and in order to reflect the changing world in which we now live, McNamara shifted the focus from the struggles of a couple to explore the multiplicities that exist within each of us and their fierce and tender grace - reframing each role as a different facet of a single personality.
Matthew Christensen has staged the pas de deux from Le Corsaire, one of classical era ballets most famous and performed excerpts, noted for showcasing the dancers technical abilities and artistry. Christensen also staged a suite of character dances from Act III of Swan Lake including the bold Hungarian, playful Neapolitan, romantic Russian and spirited Spanish dances.
Erin Kouwes Undercurrent is a piece she built collaboratively with the dancers. The dancers embrace sweeping, expansive movements in choreography reminiscent of the rhythmic rolling and overlapping of water currents in a swirling eddy. Experience the versatility and artistry of our talented young dancers in a performance appropriate and engaging for all ages.
