Andrea Wulf: The Adventures of Alexander von Humboldt
Andrea Wulf, the New York Times bestselling author of The Invention of Nature, returns to The Huntington with a lecture drawn from her new illustrated book, The Adventures of Alexander von Humboldt, her second work about the intrepid explorer and naturalist. Wulf partnered with artist Lilliam Melcher to bring Humboldt's five-year expedition in South America to vivid life, taking inspiration from his diaries, plant specimens, sketches, maps, and drawings. The book takes readers along on Humboldt's adventures: his dangerous river journey along the Orinoco; his spectacular climb of Chimborazo; and his encounters with the natural world and the indigenous people of South America. Based on observations during his travels, Humboldt was the first scientist to warn against the threat of human-induced climate change. A book signing follows the lecture. If the program sells out we will not have a wait list, but visitors may come the day of the program and wait on a standby basis.
