Equivocation
England, 1605. King James I and his Prime Minister, Sir Robert Cecil, order William Shakespeare to write a play about the famous Gunpowder Plot. Shakespeare and his company of actors attempt to decline the King's order but the King won't take 'no' for an answer. Shag, as he's called in the play, and his company are confronted with the ultimate dilemma: speak truth to power or take the money and lie. Bill Cain's play has many contemporary resonances, particularly regarding the need to equivocate, "to speak the truth in difficult times". Equivocation premiered at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 2009 and went on to have a successful run at the Seattle Rep and the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. Equivocation is directed by Kathy Dorgan and features area favorites Jason Haws and Andy Gordon.
